Taken with the same lens as yesterday's white tailed deer - http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/47598494 The critter is front lit by the early morning sun over my shoulder giving the wings a jewel like appearance. I focused on the legs - which came out pretty sharp.
I've been toying with the idea of replacing this inexpensive lens with something better for longer range macro shots like this one where you have to keep your distance or the subject will bolt. Then I see a result like this one and ask myself "why do you need a better lens?".
This lens is affected by mirror slap vibrations in the range of 1/60 - 1/8 second shutter speed while at full zoom. The answer is to remember to compensate with adjustments of either aperture, ISO or both. Here I wanted f/16 for the depth of field and had to dial in ISO=500 to get a 1/100 sec shutter speed. No big deal most of the time - as long as I remember to check it (and equally important to set it back to normal when finished!).
