Seneca Falls served as the second base camp in our grand tour. The town claims a visit by Frank Capra inspired Bedford in the movie and that notion appears in walking tours and festivals. The town is also home to the Women's Rights National Historical Park (which we visited in a previous trip); the Finger Lakes was a hotbed of free thought and progressive philosophies in the 19th century. The town is located along the Seneca-Cayuga Canal which connects those two lakes and offers a connection to the Erie Canal. There is some nice waterfront scenery and now a sculpture trail created on an abandoned railroad right of way that paralles the canal. We stayed in the Gould Hotel, a 1915 vintage fireproof structure that has been remodeled and refurbished in a major way. The name Gould is tied to the water pump company of that name, located in the town even today. There are a number of interesting pubs and restaurants in the downtown.

North of the town is the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge which is home to a growing number of nesting eagles. A short trek north also takes you to the Erie Canal, and on to Lake Ontario in the vicinity of Sodus Point.
