William Pryor Letchworth always had an interest in history and along the way collected and preserved some things he felt represented a culture that was being lost. This is reflected in the contents of the museum, but also in his preservation of the last of a Seneca Council lodge.
Along the way he was approached by the family of Mary Jemison for help, as her remains were in a cemetery that was threatened. Her bones were moved to council grounds. Mary had an amazing history tied to European and Indian culture, having been kidnapped and adopted by Indians during the French and Indian war.
