A mirror-less SLR acquired in November 2018 seeking a lighter and more compact but capable rig for travel.

This is an interesting offering that covers most of Ye Olde Photographer anticipated needs. It has a high resolution EVF in addition to the tilting rear LCD screen. The mount is the EF-M, slightly smaller and shorter register than the EF and EF-S mounts. While currently there are not a huge array of lenses in that mount, there are enough for YOP, and the kit came with the EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM. Combining that with the fact an adapter is available to mount EF and EF-S lenses on the camera (a separate adapter can even mount the FD manual focus lenses), he can use glass already on hand. The sensor is a 24 Mpixel APS-C format. The machine also has WiFi and BlueTooth. The latter can be used to do remote control from an app on a smart phone

The camera supports a bunch of different size and aspect ratios, as well as some video. Ye Olde Photographer will likely be too old and feeble to press the shutter release before he learns all the features, but so far he has found it similar enough to his other Canon models for still photography. The response time appears notably better than either of the earlier cameras here.

A few real world example shots have been added to this page. If you bring up the one marked "Try Full Rez" and click 'original' in the size selection you can experience a full 5328x4000 display (Ye Olde Photographer has the M5 configured for 4:3 aspect ratio as a personal preference.)

For travel purposes, the next lens acquisition (Jan 2019) was a 22mm f/2 near-pancake lens that makes a really compact package and also has an f/2.0 aperture.

Beyond that other possibilities included the 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 and/or a 32mm f/1.4 prime that could have been temptations down the road. There is also a 28mm f/3.5 Macro with built in LED ring light that goes to 1.2x magnification, and a 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens for telephoto work, but Ye Olde Photographer's previously acquired EOS lenses adapt and work decently. YOP's interest in more lenses has dwindled partly due to lack of need but also because now in 2023 it appears the EOS M series may fade in favor of the R series gear.

There are adapters available to use the old manual focus Canon FD series lenses. Since YOP has a selection of FD lenses, such an adapter, a FotoDiox Pro series, has magically appeared here as of late January 2019. An FD 50mm f/1.4 should be a decent lens for copy or table top work, as an example.

In July 2021 YOP acquired a 7 Artisans all manual 60mm f/2.8 macro lens that goes down to 1:1 and seems to work quite nicely. The camera needs to be configured to accept the lack of lens communication, but does so without problem. Scroll down to the bottom of this gallery page for a short tour. The lack of auto functions is not a big deal for what YOP normally does with such a lens.
