Relief

view map

This relief has been reconstructed from the lower part fragment; the upper part was shaped similar to another fragment in the museum, showing the head of the goddess. On that fragment, she has a horn on the forehead, which was omitted by the copyist. So, the ‘reconstruction’ resulted in a representation of goddess Kubaba, wearing a ‘polos’-type hat, and having a stylised pomegranate (symbol of fertility) in her right hand (which is o.k.) and an ear of wheat in her left (which normally should have been a mirror).

This relief (fragment) was excavated on the Long Wall of Carchemish/Karkamış (on the Euphrates River and on the Turkish-Syrian border, c. 25 km south of Birecik).

pommegranate - it is what i m talking - the color of the juice, red, magically symbolizes Nature blood, Earth blood may be, so, is this kings offer to the gods. The tradition was imported from assiria (see king Gouda and others) to me seems easy.. it' s only my point to interpret these beautiful gravings.
