Noah’s ark mosaic
I managed to make a mess when taking a picture of the notice, but I could read the word “synagogue, and using “Noah’s ark mosaic synagogue Adana” in a search engine on the internet found a text that fitted in an article “Basilical synagogues of Turkey – Revival or survival of an ancient tradition”. And in that:
“Our third synagogue comes from Mopsuestia – today Misis/Yakapinar in the province of Adana in south Turkey. The foundations and superb mosaics of a basilical structure were excavated in the 1950’s. […] The apsidal end was not clearly revealed during the excavations and a later “conservation project” encompassed only the main aisle and one aisle on each side, transforming them into the Misis Mosaic Museum. So the fragments of mosaics from the outermost north aisle depicting scenes from the Samson story were conserved in patches and placed in the garden. The inscriptions accompanying the scenes are from the Septuagint. And the panel in the west end of the main aisle depicts a box with four legs bearing the inscription “…” (Greek, but the same as on my picture). Identification of the structure as a synagogue or a church is problematical and has given rise to scholarly discussion”. The paper gives a broad date: 3 to 7th century for four synagogues under discussion.
On several occasions I tried visiting the Misis museum, but always found it closed (last time it was out of reach as the area was flooded). I now understand I shouldn’t have bothered: I found it at my feet in 2019.
