Artemis Mosaic
Dated to the mid-second century AD this mosaic was uncovered in a Roman villa at the ancient city of Aigeai in Yumurtalık district of Adana. The mosaic depicts a view of ancient Aigeai an de an offering to Artemis. In the left part of the panel stands a statue of Artemis on a tall pedestal rising amidst plants; in the centre is a lighthouse with the sea in the background. In the centre of the mosaic are a man and a woman seated in their armchairs. The figure on the left is offering Artemis a rabbit he holds and lifts with his right hand. Hounds, rabbit and offering of game to Artemis are among popular themes depicted in mosaics of antiquity.
