Istanbul Axis Istanbul march 2018 5413.jpg

I asked several of the personnel of the Axis shopping mall if they knew who was represented on the statue at some distance in the park opposite. Most didn’t have a clue, but someone told me that of course it must be Atatürk. I have seen many Atatürk statues, but this one looked different. I could not see clearly from a distance, so I crossed the pedestrian bridge across a busy motorway and found myself in, what according to Google Maps, is Fatih Park. I saw so only when back home, but I did recognize the beard, the head dress, the canon: here was Fatih Mehmet in the act of conquering the city. The work is not bad, but I had the strong feeling that the bronze-coloured paint was peeling off a plastic or glass fibre ground, so authorities should consider keeping a close eye on it. And some instruction to the Axis personnel might be in order.
