Bursa Orhan Gazi tomb May 2014 6894.jpg

The present Tomb of Orhan Gazi (1281-1362) was built by Sultan Abdülaziz in 1863. It is a square building, measuring 15½ x 15½ m (inside).
The large cenotaph sarcophagus is surrounded by a brass grid and covered with velvet, which is embroidered in silver thread; an epitaph (in Ottoman Arabic script) quotes words of the Prophet Mohamed.
The other 21 smaller sarcophagi belong to Holofira Nilüfer Hatun (his first wife, who he married when he was 18 years old; she was a Byzantine princess and the mother of Sultan Murad I), to some of his children and to other members of the Ottoman family.

The building itself is in late-Ottoman classical style, while its interior shows the mid-19th century style, influenced by European Neo-classicism. The wall paintings are an example of 19th century ‘Turkish Rococo’ decoration.
