Pond Life - Mallards, Wood Ducks, Turtles, Frogs ~ WV ~ 2006

August 21st - The pond is almost empty again, it's been three years since it completely dried out. Gertrude [the Mallard hen]showed up for one day on August 3rd and stayed for about six hours...looking bewildered. We haven't seen her since...it's a good thing at this point. I have inset the picture of Gertrude into the pond shot to show the different water levels. There are still two snappers and many bullfrogs hanging in so far.
June 8th - I found this shot from last year, taken June 25th which shows what can happen to our pond when it doesn't rain...it's filled by rain watershed from our hills. It also is why we are not really expecting any nesting around here...however, there are creeks and runs within a 1/2 mi.
April 22nd - Frank built and mounted a Wood Duck nest box north of the dam, upon advice we relocated it April 24th....the head/south of the pond with an obstructed approach.
Mar 18th - Wood Frogs have moved on, this morning we had our first visit ever from a pair of Mallards...for a couple of minutes.
Jan 1st - Strange substance in our pond...a mystery which remains...[no longer a mystery...the pond is almost empty, it must have been a branch]

Hi Tam!

Who knows...I certainly hope at least one pair stays! They both were here again this afternoon...more pics! LOL I'd surely love to see what you could do with your setup.

How exciting about the ducks!! Great shots you captured, I will be curious to see which pair end up nesting there. Wonder if they both would?? Keep us informed....
