Arriving from the north-west via the Bloomfield Track, the wilderness ends abruptly at Cape Tribulation as one meets a bitumen road and busy tourist developments nestled in the coastal rainforest. This was quite a shock, and not a pleasant one.
Nevertheless, this is the Daintree rainforest, a high-rainfall area where the forest reaches down from high peaks across the lowlands and right to the beach. The narrow lowlands are a mosaic of national park and private land, the latter still mostly forested; the mountains behind are all in the Daintree National Park.
