Guest (signed Rob Mixon)....How is Lizzie Collins Perry related to the other Perrys interred in Coco Plum Cemetery? I saw where she was from Georgia, as are my realatives, and myself. I ask because I am related to all of the other Perrys who are interred there, including my father's parents, his grandparents, one of his father's brothers, and a nephew, as well as his twin brother and sister, who are buried on the right, just as you go through the entrance of the cemetery, quite sadly, all alone. I have been trying to figure out how Lizzie Perry is related to us, even via marriage, as she is in that same plot, I think....? My grandfather had three brothers: "Judge," Dewey, and Charlie, and a baby sister, named Hilda. I think Charlie's wife's name was Margaret, as it is their son, who is also buried there. The only one of my grandfather's brothers who is buried in Coco Plum, is "Judge." The book about Pinewood Cemetery is now available. The history of the cemetery and the efforts to restore it are covered by the author, Harriet Stiger Liles. There's a section on each grave and their families. As you already know, this Cemetery contains the remains of many Miami pioneers. Adrienne: The house you mention is on SW 47th Court, one block west of the Cemetery. I lived just south of it for many years. I don't remember the number, but if you turn onto SW 47th Court from Sunset Drive it will be on your right about 3 or 4 houses down. The original descendants of the family that moved it from Georgia owned it until the mid-1990s when it was sold. The new owner extensively remodeled the house and , in my opinion, ruined its original charm but you will still be able to recognize it. It was used quite often as a movie and commercial set during the years I lived there.

Hello, Does anyone remember a one story white house with columns on the porch near the cemetery? The house was orig. circa 1860 brought over from Georgia and rebuilt. It was a corner house. I grew up in Coral Gables and was always fascinated by that house. I drove down from Palm Beach today looking for it and couldn't find it!! The cemetery looks great! I used go there with my friends all the time. Any information would be helpful, Thanks Adrienne

Brooke - I remember you and your family and remember playing in the cemetary when we were kids along with Rick Wheeler and the rest of the neighborhood. I grew up about two blocks away on S.W. 76th Terrace. The cemetary is certainly a different place since it has been cleaned up and maintained.

Wow. I grew up just across the street! We played for hours on end in the woods there. It's probably been gentrified beyond recognition now. Ours was the 4th house down the block from Sunset Rd. on 47th Ave (Erwin Rd.). I have to get back to MT Graves now!

My father's grandmother Liz Perry is also there and a marker to both my parents C. Grady Mixon and Ida May Mixon (Price) is posted near Liz Perry. The Richardson's marker an many other pioneers to south Floida, as well as the historian markers, are still represented there. The head stone marker for Liz Perry also has a small jonquil plant that was brought in from Nassau (has small yellow flower when blooming) from a cemetary where some of the Price ralatives were also buried. Much unsaid history at Pinewood (Cocoplumb) Cemetery. May the preservation always be continued! Rob Mixon

I absolutely love that cemetery...as well as the Barnacle but it sickens me to see the 3-story townhome development to the left...I oftentimes venture over there, sit out on the porch, and imagine it was (fill in the blank year before 196? when it was torn down). Great ideas for my writings sift within my brain...I find Cauley Square equally as inviting...

Don...thank you, so very much, for adding this to the Photo Gallery! I hope that everyone will call up the Web Site, on Cocoplum cemetery, to view the protected hammack of tropical foliage that is still there. So many of our vacant lots...hammacks...have been excoriated, & built over, where once we had our forts & tree houses, or just enjoyed their "unbuilt-on" status. It was like our "woods," a rare site, indeed, in the suburbs of the big City! Thanks again. robertah47@aol.com
