Popeye's Playhouse with Scrubby (top), Skipper Chuck (middle left), Uncle Don (middle right) and Annie Orphanic (bottom)

Miami, Florida

Thank you to Keith Pesce for contributing this great old image of his dad Don Pesce who performed as Uncle Don on Popeye's Playhouse with Skipper Chuck. His dad "Uncle Don" wrote the song "Peace, Love, and Happiness" that so many of the people in their posts refer to.

I grew up in North Miami and Annie Orphanic lived on the next block. I had a friend who worked at WTVJ and I was told she eventually married one of the cameramen.

I saw the whole crew at the Grand Openning of the Pepsi Cola Bottling Plant on 36th Street and the Palmetto Xway. I think I was around 10 (would have been 1965).

Don's description left out the puppets on the wall, above the autographs. That's Limbo Lion and Sunshine Crow. Sunshine had his own little hole in the wall to the right of Limbo, but he's probably there with Limbo so he can be included in the picture. I think later they added a third puppet, a mouse they called Squeezix, or something like that. I'm pretty sure that when the windmill on the wall started to spin, it meant something was about to happen, but I can't remember what it was...I won the lucky balloon drop when I was on the show. They gave the winner lots of candy and games.

Wow, this picture sure brings back memories. I grew up in Hialeah and watched the Skipper and friends religiously. My highlight was seeing them at a personal appearance and having Scrubby use my back to sign autographs on. I work in the television field now and sure miss the old days.
