WCKT-TV Channel 7's Wayne Chandler with Toby the Robot reading the Sunday funnies in the Miami Herald

Miami, Florida

Thank you to Alvin Lederer for contributing this image of Wayne Chandler with Toby the Robot reading the Sunday funnies in the Miami Herald. Wayne Chandler worked at WCKT-TV, (now WSVN-TV) from 1969-1984. During his time as a weatherman at the station, Mr. Chandler also appeared on a popular children's show Sunday Funnies with Charlie Folds, who appeared as his sidekick Toby the Robot.

My sister worked at the station for many years and managed to get me on Sunday's Funnies a few times (1969-1970). It was rare to have black kids on the show, so many of my childhood friends were amazed. Mr. Chandler and the entire staff were always kind and had a enormous hand in building my self-esteem.

Charlie Folds wore the robot outfit, an inverted plastic garbage can (you can see the handle below his right arm).

I remember the 6 o'clock news on channel 7 weekdays, with Wayne Farris and Richard Whitcomb. Morris McLemore did the sports. Of course Ralph Renick and (Bob) Weaver the Weatherman were their competitors on WTVJ channel 4 back then.
