This monstrosity was parked at a trailhead on Quadra Island. It was
taking up three, or perhaps four spaces. But that's not an important
matter. What is important is that this is an example of how excessive
consumerism continues to run rampant in the face of all the scientific
evidence that we are heading toward a climate catastrophe.

Consumer capitalism is based on the idea that companies should be free
to put whatever products they want on the market, and consumers should
be free to buy what they want - subject to some government regulation
(which is quickly disappearing in the US). But clearly this economic
system is damaging our environment and harming the prospects of
future generations.

I looked up the Unicat Man on the Internet. Fully equipped with all the
options, this vehicle can cost close to $1 million CAD. Does anybody
need that? And Unicat makes even bigger vehicles than this.

I am fully aware that I am hypocritical in raising these concerns.
I drove my vehicle to the trailhead, and I carried along one of my
many cameras. I am part of the problem. So I believe that the
solution to the problem cannot be based solely on the hope of better
voluntary behavior from weak-willed people like myself. Instead, we
need a much stronger regulatory regime to move economic activity in
a more sustainable direction. I know that many people will be outraged
by any loss in their personal freedom, but I am far more concerned
about my grandson's freedom to breath clean air.

It's a very expensive house on wheels, for that kind of money I'd want to live in it full time!

wow, shocking to see on our 'little' island...totally out of place anywhere but here?
marie wood 18-Aug-2020 16:15
Wow, how 'out of touch' can u be....shocking to see on our island in Canada

Being against excess is somehow Anti American and probably anti Canadian.. Not caring seems to be in vogue. V

I concur with all that has been said and am deeply troubled with the attitude that continues to prevail amongst those who feel they can do anything they want. they were never taught the code that we must all act for the greater good of the planet and each other or they have turned a blind eye and satisfied their need for bloating their already inflated ego. To see this on a small island who's population goes to great lengths to be sustainable & support each other is an obscenity I could go on!!!!!!!.

Amazing what some equipment people need for a short walk in the country

A ditto to the previous commenters - as I weep for humanity; and my grand children.

Totally agree with your sentiments. Any idea what it was doing there? Was it
just being used as a camper van?

Well Boris has already given lots of information, so let me add that MAN stands for Maschienen Fabrik Augsburg Nürnberg. They are known for building heavy trucks. This is probably the one of the smallest they make. The ironic thing here is that this would probably be illegal in Germany for private use. How it got a Karlsruhe license plate, I don't know.
Borisalex17-Aug-2020 09:15
Yes.. this car is from Germany and Made in Germany with the license plate from the city of Karlsruhe! We have many of them and even more bigger, and older. They are monsters in any means. I don´t understand why private citizen must drive them (except from Fire brigades, rescue teams and the military etc.), where they originally come from. Karlsruhe is known as a "Beamtenstadt", because the high court is based there, and I believe the owner of this monster is a retired judge with lots of pension to spent to bring it to your country.... what wast of resources, money etc.

nice capture and interesting information.V.

Even at half the price this vehicle is obscene. What disturbs me is that someone with such excess cash chose to spend it on this. There is so much good they could have done with that money. Our priorities seem so screwed up. Like all of us, I am not without sin, but I do try to be informed and think of the consequences my actions have on others. V
Raymond Ma17-Aug-2020 01:12
I have heard about such vehicles...that are extreme vehicles that can go anywhere off the grid. They have solar panels, water purifiers, satellite phones etc. They are like a survivalist armour vehicle. Way over the top! Must be disturbing to see this there. I agree, the planet needs our attention. V
globalgadabout17-Aug-2020 00:24
the ugly machine is certainly symbolic of excess, and of ego suppressing any trace of common sense...alas it is tough to convince those who feel entitled that they must change their ways, and quickly..
Helen Betts17-Aug-2020 00:04
Unfortunately, people here would react exactly as you say, outraged by any loss in their personal freedom. They're so outraged by that thought, they also won't wear a face mask to help save the lives of others. We can all see and read what's happening around the world climate wise; I can't for the life of me understand why so many people don't seem to care about it and that it could mean there's no sustainable world for our grandchildren. Just like they don't seem to care about the death of 170,000 Americans with the possibility of losing a million more.
bill friedlander17-Aug-2020 00:02
I totally agree.
Neil Marcus16-Aug-2020 23:24
You my friend are not weak willed! I concur that as a people we have run a muck and not paid attention to the disadvantages that we reap upon. civilization

I share your concerns. I live next to those who fear Obama is still coming to take all their guns. Every other pastime involves fossil fuels. Sad.
