50mm f1.8 Lens & Hoya R72 IR Filter

Lens and Filter

Close Up of Canon 50mm f/1.8 Lens and Hoya R72 IR Filter

Here is a closer look at the lens and filter I have been using. From what I have heard (and experienced) some lenses work very well for IR and some are not good at all and exhibit lots of flare. I once saw a list of recommended lenses for IR, but can't seem to track it down at this moment. The list also indicated some lenses to avoid for IR. See notes below for more info from what I recall or have heard from other...

At approximately $75 usd, the 50mm f/1.8 lens is a great bargin. There is no reason to not own one, even though it feels like a cheap plastic toy. Optically it is pretty good!

In case you are wondering, yes I have a 52mm to 58mm step ring between the lens and filter.

OK, As mentioned above, I can't find the list of recommended and not recomended lenses for IR, but I recall the following or have heard from others that these all work very well (all listed are Canon Lenses):
     50mm f/1.8,   28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS,   75-300 f/4.0-5.6,   17-40mm f/4.0 L,   70-200 f/4.0 L
This list seems to cover a reasonable working range at a relatively obtainable price point(?)!

Canon EOS 300D Digital Rebel ,Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM
1s f/8.0 at 75.0mm iso100 (with Hoya +2 close up filter) full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Here is a link for a list of lenses that work well and a list of lenses that don't work.
Sorry, I don't know how to make it an active link...just cut and paste.
