Why use raw?

Notice the burnt out blinds on the left...surely a very difficult exposure problem. If you have the capability to save your images in raw format, do so! It is easier to reclaim detail from overexposed shots in a raw image than a jpg image. Here I placed the burnt out image on top of one I had process to have the blinds darker and I combined the two with a layer mask, painting through the detail from the darker image beneath it. Using this method requires two raw processings of the same image. One for the shadow area and one for the highlight area. Raw processing is not a mysterious or difficult thing. It is very fast with Adobe's Raw Converter. If you have an older edition of Photoshop it might not have the Adobe Raw Converter file that includes your later model camera. Check Adobe's website for a new version.
