I learned the most important point to be selected correctly, at least for this image, is the grey point. After clicking on different spots several times I found the magic spot for this image. (Using Curves). The resulting image looked much better, especially the skin color, but the deck looked too red and the railing had a magenta cast. I made a selection first of the decking (including the shadows) with the Magic Wand and fine tuned it with the lasso,then desaturated the red in hue/saturation. DNext using the same method selected the railing behind the man and desaturated the magenta. The grey metal (I think) bar going diagonally on the image looked a bit blue to me so I selected that and desaturated the blue.
