Australians remember Irwin a year on

Australians will mark the first anniversary of the death of 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin today.
The famous conservationist was killed on September 4 last year when a stingray barb pierced his heart while he was filming a documentary off Port Douglas in far north Queensland.
His death shocked and saddened people around the world, with thousands visiting his beloved Australia Zoo on Queensland's Sunshine Coast to pay their respects.
The Irwin family will not be holding a ceremony to mark today's anniversary or be present at Australia Zoo.
Instead, they have decided to celebrate Irwin's life with 'Steve Irwin Day' on November 15.
Simon Kennedy from the Wilderness Society says Irwin made a huge contribution to the protection and conservation of wildlife.
"He was a genuine educator about the needs of Australian wildlife and protecting nature and he was very much a one-off in that respect," she said.
The wildlife conservationist was a former employee of the Maroochy Shire Council and Mayor Joe Natoli has paid tribute to him.
"He was such a champion for the creatures that don't have a voice, he was the voice for them and he was one of our unsung heroes," Mr Natoli said.
The Maroochy Shire Council has commissioned an artist to create a sculpture of Irwin as a lasting tribute.
