Irwins mark anniversary in private

The Irwin family plan to spend Tuesday's anniversary away from the spotlight
AdvertisementIt will be business as usual at Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo in south-east Queensland today, the first anniversary of the Crocodile Hunter's death.
His widow Terri and staff at Australia Zoo, at Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast, have decided the anniversary will be a "quiet, private day", and will instead celebrate Irwin's life on November 15, to be known as Steve Irwin Day.
Today marks a year since a stingray fatally speared its barb into the 44-year-old's chest while he filmed one of his famous nature documentaries on Batt Reef near Port Douglas.
The zoo will operate as usual with no special events planned to mark the day, an Australia Zoo spokeswoman said.
Terri and children Bindi, 9, and Robert, 3, will spend the anniversary in a private location in the US, the spokeswoman said, where they had travelled to last week.

The Irwins have nominated November 15 for the first annual Steve Irwin Day, when fans will be encouraged to wear khaki, camp out in their backyards or visit the zoo for a number of special events.
The day is also aimed at raising funds for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors Worldwide.
"September 4 is a day for Steve's family, friends and fans to reflect, whilst November 15 will be a day of celebration, just the way Steve would have liked," a statement on the zoo's website said.
Irwin's death sparked an outpouring of grief around Australia and in the US, where he was famous for his eccentric, passionate personality and typical Australian jocularity.
In the days after his death, the entrance to Australia Zoo became a makeshift shrine to the conservationist, overflowing with flowers, condolence cards, balloons and other Aussie tokens such as crocodile toys and flags.
