Also known as the Marble Church, Frederik's church is an Evangelical Lutheran church. It has the largest church dome in Scandinavia with a span of 31 metres (102 ft).
It was designed by the architect Nicolai Eigtved in 1740.
Due to its massive cost of the originally desired Norwegian marble, then royal succession issues, the church was left as an unfinished ruin for more than 100 years.
It was until the 1870s, financier Carl Frederik Tietgen purchased the site, agreeing to fund its completion.
Architect Ferdinand Meldahl redesigned parts of it, substituting most of the expensive marble with more affordable limestone for affordability.
Finally, the grand dome and the church were completed in 1894.
