After a visit to the Abdullah Mosque (photo 01 - 06), a memorial to the late King Hussein's grandfather, the guide led us through a market then made a stop at the Roman Theatre. One of the interesting characters of Amman is that the city's modern buildings blend with the remnants of the ancient civilizations.
The main attraction, of course, is the Citadel (Photo 16 - 30) which towered above Downton Amman. The excavated architecture was believed to have been built starting from the Stone Age. It went through different periods including Greco-Roman time when the City was named Philadelphia (Greek name meaning Brotherhood Love). When the City became under the influence of the Roman culture, Philadelphia was reconstructed in typically grand Roman style with colonnaded streets, baths, an Amphitheater, and impressive public buildings.
