For this shot, taken with the 24-120mm VR lens 1/100th at f5.6 ISO 800, the Nikon AF system refused to focus on the skating rink. No matter whether set to spot focus, or switched to wide area, it simply locked out. Spot focus would lock on to the red and white canopy or the geodesic dome, but not on to the skaters. In the end, I was forced to use manual focus.
