The rivercat terminal here at Putney lies at the end of a very long wharf, made necessary because
the intervening river bed lies just beneath the surface of the water causing the navigavable channel
at this point on the Parramatta River to be particularly narrow. 120 years or more ago, a large
part of the freight headed west to Parramatta (and points further west) was carried by towed river
barges. At low tide, it was here that fully laden barges would "kiss" the river bottom if great
care was not taken. Hence this place is known as "Kissing Point".
