We are rapidly approaching our destination for today. The 2011 national census places the population
of St Marys at some 11,000, which makes it larger than either Springwood or Katoomba. Many many years
ago it was sufficiently distant by public transport or horse for it to be able to sustain a comprehensive
commercial centre of its own but the fact that practically everyone has a car and can easily visit
the enormous shopping facilities of Penrith has (once again) ruined the viability of "High St" shopping.
I prepare myself to be depressed all over again.
