When I was a child, Mitchells Pass was already bypassed by a much improved Great Western Highway
but whenever we visited relatives in the Blue Mountains, my father would often choose the "short cut"
to Blaxland which, while narrow and slow, was nonetheless shorter and quicker if traffic was heavy.
As early as the 1960s the (then) two lane main highway was already inadequate for the traffic it
needed to carry and Mitchell's Pass often eased congestion a lot. In any event we would always
have to cross this wonderful old bridge.
