The recent groundbreaking genetic study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution sequenced 132 ancient genomes from the Bury gallery grave (Allée sépulcrale) located in Oise, France, dating between 3200 and 2500 BC.
The findings detail a dramatic population turnover, as well as distinct Y-chromosome data:
Complete Population Turnover: The study found zero genetic connection between the people buried during Phase 1 (pre-3000 BC) and those in Phase 2 (post-2800 BC). The earlier group vanished completely following a multi-century hiatus, after which a genetically distinct population moved into the Paris Basin.
Haplogroup H Data: The term "Hap-H" (or Haplogroup H) likely refers to the discovery of Y-DNA Haplogroup H samples and distinct deep-ancestry lineages within this region. While the Phase 1 individuals mainly carried other haplogroups, later groups and matching DNA datasets in the Oise region have yielded Haplogroup H lineages connecting to ancient European and Near Eastern branches.
Pathogen Presence: Researchers found ancient traces of Yersinia pestis (the plague bacterium) and louse-borne relapsing fever in the remains, pointing to a combination of disease and migration as causes for the massive prehistoric population decline.
