Y chromosome haplogroups showed lower diversity among males,
but with distinct patterns between phases (Supplementary Table 4
and Extended Data Fig. 1). While men from Phase 1 generally carried
haplogroups H2a1 or I2a1a2, men from Phase 2 carried haplogroup
I2a1a1 almost exclusively.

A new study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution examines the remains of 132 individuals buried in a large megalithic tomb near Bury, about 50 kilometers north of Paris. The site was used during two separate time periods, with a significant population decline occurring around 3000 BC between them.

Genetic analysis shows that the people buried before and after this decline were not related, indicating a major population replacement.

"We see a clear genetic break between the two periods," said Frederik Valeur Seersholm, assistant professor at the Globe Institute at the University of Copenhagen and one of the lead authors of the study.

The Bury burial alley (located in Bury in the Oise region) is one of the longest Neolithic collective burials found in northern France Excavated between 2001 and 2007, this exceptional structure combines wooden walls, megalithic slabs and dry stone to form an impressive gallery nearly 20 meters long .The monument served as a resting place for at least 316 individuals over a period from approximately 3400 to 1950 BC. The study of this site has revealed fascinating facts that have revolutionized our understanding of Neolithic populations:An unexpected genetic mix: Ancient DNA analyses have shown that the tomb was used during two distinct phases housing two genetically almost unrelated populations. The first phase (around 3200-3100 BC) housed local populations, while the second (after 2900 BC) showed significant Iberian genetic signatures, revealing an isolated migratory wave.A strong male predominance: Genetic sexing of the remains has revealed a significant overrepresentation of men, accounting for approximately 70% of the individuals. This imbalance, observed in many contemporary monuments, suggests burials intended for specific or privileged members of the community.A hybrid architecture: Unlike covered walkways made entirely of stone, Bury shows tangible evidence of wooden walls that divided and supported the structure over the long term, demonstrating a complementarity between stone and wood among prehistoric builders.
