Pemp Real a Vo ! - 6/6.

Douarnenez.

For a long time, Brittany was essentially a land of fishermen and farmers.
In the port of Douarnenez while the men were at sea, the women worked in the cannery and prepared the sardines. They were called “Penn Sardin” (sardines heads). The living conditions were difficult: women had to work only as long as fishermen brought back sardines. They worked day and night, earning the price of a litre of milk per hour.
On 24 November 1924, the whole city went on strike to ask for a salary increase: 1 franc an hour. The watchword is “Pemp real a vo!! “ (“five pennies we will have !!”) - A « penny" was equivalent to a quarter of Franc.
The mayor Daniel Le Flanchec, engaged to the side of the women of factories, advises them to ask 1.25 francs an hour. He is the victim of an assassination attempt by the employers' henchmen. Trade unionists like Lucie Colliard or Charles Tillon come to help organize the movement. The strike has a national resonance and ends in January 1925. It lasted 46 days. The winning women receive a 1 franc per hour wage, a raise for night hours and recognition of the right to form unions.
The struggle of Penn Sardin remains in the collective consciousness of Brittany as a symbol of victory for a just cause.

Augustine Julien, Member of strike comittee.

Excellent image and sad story on how they were treated in the wages department.
That type of treatment always causes employees to organize for a better work conditions and wages.

This gallery just keeps getting better and better. She looks like she is almost coming out of the wall and coming toward us. There is a lot of significance behind the mural.

This talented artiste created this mural art with a visual effect like 3D, to make this member of strike committee stand out. She's coming out of the wall and walking towards the viewers. With such convincing narration, how can you not support her ? ~VVV~
