Au Moyen Age les édifices religieux d’une certaine importance étaient peints, aussi bien à l’intérieur qu’à l’extérieur. Un chatoiement de couleurs s’offrait aux yeux des fidèles.

Les murs intérieurs de l’abbatiale et les piliers ont été repeints entre 1857 et 1859 dans le style médiéval par Antoine Mayoli, un peintre italien installé à Clermont-Ferrand et une restauration des voûte nef, croisée de transept et choeur a été réalisée en 1988-90. Celle des déambulatoires et des chapelles rayonnantes en 2004.
La polychromie actuelle rappelle donc celle des édifices religieux du moyen Age.


In the Middle Ages religious buildings of some importance were painted, both inside and outside. A shimmer of color was offered to the eyes of the faithful.

The interior walls of the abbey church and the pillars were repainted between 1857 and 1859 in the medieval style by Antoine Mayoli, an Italian painter living in Clermont-Ferrand and a restoration of the nave vault, transept and choir was carried out in 1988-90. That of ambulatories and radiant chapels in 2004.
The present polychromy is therefore reminiscent of that of the religious buildings of the Middle Ages.
