Other than Jays, squirrels, bear, deer, and elk, the hazelnut tree and nuts are relatively free from animal and bird enemies. The young tree trunks will be painted white to distract bugs, deer, and other harmful animals and insects. The white paint on young trees also helps prevent sunburn.
