In forestry, windfall or windthrow refers to trees that have been blown down or broken by the wind. It's a natural disturbance that can significantly impact forest ecosystems and can represent both a loss of merchantable wood and an increased risk of wildfire. In this old forest, the wind has made a hole in the canopy and new seeds will sprout to fill in the gaps in the forest canopy. This is a good example of why not to be in forest during a wind storm.
