Conch or Bracket Fungi

Central Vancouver Island

In BC forestry, "conch" refers to the fruiting body of certain wood-decay fungi, also known as shelf or bracket fungi. These structures, which produce spores, are visible on the external surface of trees and indicate that the fungus is present and causing decay. They are a sign of internal heartrot, which can weaken a tree's structural integrity.
