Save A Trillium, Pick A Daisy

Somewhere Between Cowichan Lake and Port Renfrew

If you pick a Trillium, the plant may not have enough energy to survive throughout the winter. They have a few short weeks in the spring to collect as much sunlight and nutrients as possible to be able to survive for the rest of the year.

Trillium spread slowly through division of the rhizomes, but they can also be grown from seed. Seeds can take 2-3 years for growth to appear above ground. Once established, it can take 5-8 years for Trillium plants to flower, and in some cases, up to 10 years. After the plant produces its first flower, it will bloom annually in early spring, with the bloom lasting for around three weeks. Once established, under good conditions, Trillium can live for hundreds of years. ~ Cornell University Botanic Gardens
