First attempt: Total failure, resulting in a spectacular splash and all sorts of thrashing around in the water. (Unfortunately I didn't see it soon enough, so missed that shot.) Third attempt: Success! Not pretty, but after a lot of squiggling around he managed to get up on his knees and paddle out to deeper water.

After watching the action I'm convinced that, in level of difficulty, 'Step 1' must rank right behind the step for managing to stand up and not fall off. This boarder was happy staying on his knees and paddling, opting out of the standing up stage.
