The gulls were combing the tidal pools and rocks for roe that was washed ashore from the herring spawn. Herring roe is the tiny fish eggs in their enclosing skein, the eggs we saw were all from broken skeins. The eggs are small and difficult to see in this image, but the gull wasn't having any difficulty finding them.
