wow - lucky you - that's a really neat looking bird - I love the backward pointing toes as he's flying.

Thanks for the comments all. Yes, these things can fly and they are pretty strange looking when they do. The image below was the best I could capture of this one flying- it was hard to keep it in frame. This one was quite mellow, as I was slowly able to work my way up very close to it.

Very nice Great Blue Heron Brent. They are so skittish around here, I could never get this close, even with my 70-300mm lens! The reflection really adds to the image - good one! :-) CJ
Was this the "Conductor"?

so... can he really? (liftoff, I mean) - must look awesome in flight with those massive wings. I really like the reflection too.

Visually like the antithesis of the topic.. obviously moving but seemingly frozen and anchored in the water. -tv

Just enough movement in the wings to compliment your title. How about the 280mm with a 200mm lens? Just another PBase glitch I imagine. -COAmature

Yes, I've seen great blue herons in flight, and I know why they have been compared to pterodactyls. My husband and I were canoeing the first time I ever saw one, and it flew right over our heads with such a clatter that we almost capsized. They have an impressive wingspan.

Thanks Mary Anne :-) This really was quite an interesting bird up close- looked prehistoric when it flew.

Nice shot, Brent...sharpness in the front and some motion blur on the wing feathers.

Thanks Rod and Kurt :-) The final sharpening helped bring out detail on this one Kurt. I'm not sure the high res looks all that much better without it. I guess I should reconsider my work flow; I am no longer in the habit of saving high res processed copies but usually keep the original RAW file. That helps with storage space, but means a complete rework if I want a bigger copy later. If we ever increase the 150K limit for the challenges it will be a lot of work for me having to do the complete rework of old RAW stuff for potential Exhibition shots. Hmmm.

Brent - the detail in the body is fantastic - would love to see the high res on this one. - Angioman

The water looks really good going from light to dark down the picy, good shot mate. It looks like we're turning into birders:-)
