The setup for this is now in the pending gallery

CJ. At the end I'll show the contact sheet, the setup (well what I recorded of it) and why I chose this one to post over the others. I'm hoping it'll answer most peoples questions.

Interesting, I love this kind of stuff!

Looking at this again ISO, I'm a little distracted by the differences in the lighting. It might have better to have the light appear to be coming from the bulb rather than the right as with the lighted bulb, there should be light shining directly on his abdomen, other hand and up in to his face. Did you try this with a flash up close to the bulb to try to get that kind of an effect? CJ

Great idea and execution. - J.V.

Very cool iso. My guess is: dark room, light cloned in from outside the crop, bulb "painted" with light placing flashlight behind, subject filled with flash stage right. Answer is in the exif - I would guess a pretty long exposure???

Nice artsy piece of work. The facial concentration is perfect. -COAmature

My guess about the light source on the right is an external flash.
Agree with Debi about the wires/light-stand being cloned out... as iso says the bulb was not added, then something had to be removed.
In any case, this is very impressive.

I'm guessing that the bulb is the light source on the right then cloned into the center. -tv

Well, I'll certainly explain how it was done afterwards, but until then, I think there's more *magic* in the not knowing :)

I thought this was yours, I'm beginning to recognize your son ISO! It looks to me as though the bright light on the right illuminated the bulb as he let go of it? I'm beginning to think I should get that G9 as your images and Brent's show it's a great camera and more portable than the DSLRs. Great shot! :-) CJ

Very nice effect ISO and your model did a great job for you. Well I can't figure out how that bulb is being held there. I thought maybe a prop laid down on a mirror, but then the fly on his pants isn't reversed- though you would be thorough enough to flip it. I'm stumped.
I've had a G9 myself for several months and was surprised at the quality of a few images I took on a recent trip. I think maybe the most recent version of Adobe RAW works better than the older version I first used with the camera.

Well the light on the face and hands did seem to indicate there was no PP but I could not figure out the suspended bulb. Hmm may be the wires were photoshopped out? Excellent cloning then. Debi
iso320008-Jun-2008 08:09
Debi - the bulb wasn't photoshopped in. Another guess? ;)
ctfchallenge08-Jun-2008 07:46
Very nice- how did you manage the lighting on the hands if the bulb was photo-shopped in? Debi

The shadows are inconsistent, but the impressive acting of the boy carries it off.. at least momentarily. -tv

Cool ! Superpowers, may I ask how you did this, is photoshop? Or a mystery? :)
Rod 08-Jun-2008 01:39

Great to see you posting here again, ISO. The bar just has been raised, folks (which is awesome).
ctfchallenge07-Jun-2008 19:33
What a unique style you have, iso! I like the idea of this very much. You've captured it well... I think the PP could be worked a bit to make his "eyes in wonder" stand out a bit more... to improve on your excellent capture. ~Lydia
