Thanks for the explanation. I can kind of imagine what you must have been seeing when the log was lying there and then this neat looking piece chopped off, but I think this may be too small a part for us, visually, to appreciate. The color is nicely saturated though.

The inside surface of this piece of bark looked interesting to me, when it fell away from the log I was chopping into fireplace-sized chunks.

I see a contrast in color, but also a not very interesting (without a story) piece of bark with beetle larvae trails chewed thru it. Even with a story...unless you live in a forest ":^) Cheers, -mikey
