fantastic work!
this discussion underneath is an item for the forum! not to be held under some one's entry! I don't mind Rod giving his opinion...but insisting seems to be quite rude to me, sorry!

Another great concept, d. Very clever. I only have one critique: Egg white is pretty much transparent, and you must agree, as you've shown the grout line running under the yoke viewed thru the white, ... tho the box flap isn't visible thru the white. Other than that, XLNT. Cheers, -mikey

Very imaginative, dtallakson: I like this a lot! -- db.

The difference in Sharons picy was the excellence of it rather that analysing whether it was a picy or not. It was so well done that on first viewing I thought she had painted the design on herself. Your box picy & wotever this blokes name is picys just shouts out "I was made in Photoshop". So therein lay the difference, excellence will always be rewarded without really having to put it in box of genre. Having said this Sharons picy will not go down as a great picy because it was a Photoshop creation but it will go down as a great Graphic creation.
PS. The votes here have no bearing on what Photography is, we're all at different stages of learning so you will have to find the truth out there in books. The Internet is full of misinformation unless you're well armed with knowledge:-)

I totally understand what you're saying, Rod and TV. But what I don't understand is that if this is such a pure photography Challenge, why did 16 out of 34 voters vote for, and elect as the best, an obviously heavily-PSd image last go 'round?

I like this image. I think it took more thought and effort than just a one-shot photo would have taken. But, if you say it's not a photo, then what do we say about Sharon's stunning win last time (with one of the highest percentage of votes in a while)? I'm not picking a fight or arguing, really... I just want to understand the playing field. ~ Lydia

Long before Photoshop and computers, artists were making montages and other manipulations with photographic media. But they are rarely called "photographs" because they take on a different character and are no longer "photographs" but "montages" and can't compete on the same merits. -tv

Graphic Design, Commercial Art & Photography are three totally separate disciplines at art collages & Uni so it's not us that are creating the box's for Photoshoppers to be in. Photoshop is the standard tool used by the Graphics & Commercial art fields way before photographers jumped on this band wagon mainly with the advent of digital photography & claimed Photoshop as their own. Maybe Adobe agrees as they have now brought out a program just for photographers called Lightroom. From the beta version I saw you couldn't do any of this type of manipulation & had to take your picys into their Graphics program called Photoshop if you wanted to play at being a Commercial artist. I want to play at being a Photographer.

Clever idea dtallakson - sorry you missed the bowl ;), but very glad to see this not in pending - and best as I can tell, you are the one who determines amounts of "allowed" post processing - resist being placed into the boxes of others. - Kelly

Right on, Rod! and I'll give you 4.6 points when voting starts. -tv

No need for pending, there is always a fair amount of PP here. Personally, I prefer less obvious enhancements but again it's clever enough to stay. -COAmature

Now I'm guessing dtallakson is wondering what in the world is going on in his image discussion here. *smile*
Sorry, dtallakson. We'll stop now. *grin* Please carry on with your fascinating photos and fabulous sense of humor in them. ~Lydia

*sigh* Darn, Rod! I was looking forward to your beautiful PSd works of ahhhrt. *grin* I don't mind you winning this Challenge as long as you don't make a "no editing" rule for the next Challenge. *grin* ~Lydia

You do have a very good point Lydia about the photography skills involved in making a good montage & I must admit to enjoying some of Mr Puffs work in the other challenge. I do worry though about people developing more Photoshop skills than camera skills as I've seen some posters getting great reviews for PS images yet occasionally when they post a camera type picy it looks really ordinary.
Anyhow for me to take up your challenge I would have to do a two year course on Photoshop:-) Wot I will do though is post three magnificent picys & win this challenge so the Photoshoppers will be inspired by pure photographic artiiiiiiiistry:-)

I respectfully disagree about it not teaching us photography, Rod. I CHALLENGE YOU OFFICIALLY to take photos in a way that you can properly merge them together to create a work of art like this one of dtallakson's and enter it here or on the dpreview thread. It's not as easy as it looks to take photos of boxes and have the light on them, in a totally different scale and location (I imagine the boxes are about a foot high in "real life" ), match the light on the egg and bowl and such. The photos take much deliberation and knowledge to set up correctly so they'll 'fit' together.
The talent involved in creating shadows from the added items is significant and has a learning curve of its own. Come on, Rod. I double dog dare you! You might even ENJOY it! Wouldn't that be a shock! *wink* I look forward to seeing your work, Rod. I do think you'll enjoy it. ~Lydia
Rod 07-Dec-2007 07:51
As far as I know you can Photoshop all you want too dtallakson, just because I don't think it's conducive to learning photography & is only my opinion. You shouldn't move it to pending on just one bad review & Lydia luv's it:-)
Rod 07-Dec-2007 07:09
This is almost a photograph except for the false looking egg in the box.
