Tofik Behramov

Baku, Azerbaijan

The information here is probably irrelevant to all those here not of UK extraction. The Tofik Behramov Stadium, Azerbaijan's national football stadium, is named after the Azerbaijani linesman who awarded Geoff Hurst's controversial goal against West Germany which resulted in England winning the 1966 FIFA World Cup Final.

The picy shows up so you must have done something right. Normally you have to be logged in like when we post picys to be able to post a linky.
That's very interesting about ole Behramov & the picy of his proud son & thankful pome supporters showing the esteem he was held in.

When England were drawn in the same group as Azerbaijan in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, a ceremony was held prior to the meeting at the Tofik Behramov Stadium to honour his memory, with attendees including Geoff Hurst, Michel Platini and FIFA president Sepp Blatter. A statue of him was also unveiled at the ceremony. The link below is to quite an interesting photograph of Tofik's son (Tofik died in 1993) in the centre of a bunch of England supporters at that event. You must be mistaken Rod, Borat stadium is in Astana. :)
I was just a nipper in 1966 but remember watching the world cup final on our old B&W telly at home in Paisley, Scotland.

The two shots do work well together & interesting story about the linesman. Six months after coming to Oz I had to go back to London in 1966 when me Mum died & I was working on the Dr Doolittle film set in Dorset at the time of the final & that bugger Rex Harrison wouldn't cancel his shooting time so we could all watch the football match. We were in a field miles from anywhere & the ole git watched the game in his caravan while we fumed waiting in the fields for him to start shooting. Wot an arse he was:-)

Wow. Named after a linesman. How cool is that. I bet no other stadium has ever done such a thing. Heck, our stadium for FC Dallas is named after pizza as in Pizza Hut Park -- of course we get a few million a year for them to have their name one it. I keep trying to get them to nickname it "The Oven" since a game in July could have the pitch at 120 degF. John PS, I like the picture too.
