Challenge 145 - Two in One

~~ Two in One ~~

In this challenge we'll create what I call two-in-one images. No idea what that means? Then read on...

Requirements:

Each entry will consist of two different photographs that are side-by-side or above and below each other. The two photos will be combined into a single jpg file.

The boundary between the images must distinct.

The boundary must be straight, but not necessarily perfectly horizontal or vertical.

If the two images are different sizes, the larger image shouldn't be more than twice the size of the smaller one.

Comments and Suggestions:

Techo and tv have informed me that these dual images are referred to as diptychs. Before announcing the topic, I didn't even know there was a word for it. If you have a preconceived notion of what a diptych should or shouldn't be, it's okay to ignore that notion as long as you follow the requirements above.

I think the most effective entries in this challenge will have a strong theme shared between the two images. Images that share common shapes or colors would work. Contrasting images like rich versus poor would probably be effective. Lines that flow from one image to the next could be interesting. The same object photographed in two different settings could be cool. If you want to do a funny entry, do a dog and a fire hydrant. If you want to compare your 1Ds Mark III to your 5-year old Powershot, you can do that too.

When I did a google search for "diptych" a lot of the results were simply two different shots of the exact same scene. While these would technically be on-topic, they really aren't what I am after. Before posting something like this, ask yourself "Does placing these images next to each other add anything?"

When I said the boundary must be distinct, what I had in mind was either an abrupt transition between colors, or a solid colored border between the images. If you want to use something else (like a fade), then just make sure it's clear where one image ends and the other begins.

Well, that is all I can think of for now. I hope everyone has fun. I'm looking forward to seeing your entries.
