You're right about the dust being preparation, so yeah, for this challenge you were right to not clean it off.

I'm OK with the dust since it is titled "neglected." Not a bad shot overall. -COAmature

J.V. thanks for the advice. Standing on a chair with the blades moving trying to get the angle was tricky. My shots when I realized I needed a flash were way over flashed so I did the FEL flash exposure lock thing which resulted in this. Now I realize if I had done the FEL about 6 inches closer than where I expected to take the shot, the camera might have powered down the flash just right when the real shot is made. The real shot is a bright clean fan with natural lighting and blades blurring by -- maybe when I get a G9 someday

Thanks for being so honest John as most of us would have cheated & cleaned it off........Me being the boss in me house would have got the missus to clean it ready for shooting:-)
Nicely done on a good pattern shot mate.

I thought cleaning something off was "preparing" it and that we were supposed to use the pattern as it stands. I had several without the SD800 flash but it was to hard to hold it steady even with the IS so I had to use the only flash I have (on camera). When I showed my wife she went upstairs and cleaned it right away for fear I might show something else in the house that was dirty. My kids have moved out long ago but the fan was still running even while I took this picture. My other blurry shots show the blurred blades whirring away.

It seems like every time I take a closeup shot like this, I don't realize how dirty the object was until I blow it up on my computer. Personally, I think this would work better if it wasn't dirty, but it still looks good. Also, the lighting might be a little bit too head-on. Shop lamps or an off-camera flash can remedy this.
