I agree with CJ re the little blotches of color. Might as well clone them out as there is nothing but blotches seen there. If not a neg challenge.... then some background would be fine. Even a dark water background would fit this challenge well. Excellent detail on the Mallard. Love it. jano

Thanks, Carole. I kept those small splotches of orangeish color because I thought they added a bit of interest and picked up the color of the duck's feet. However, I can see how they might be distracting. I'll have to think about cloning them out.

Good one Mary Anne! It might be nice to have a solid color background as those brighter spots are a little distracting to my eye. Nice lighting and detail on the Mallard. CJ

Thanks for the comments, Aam, tv, and COAmature. Tv, are you suggesting that the subject should be clearly delineated from the background in order to have negative space? That's not how I understand it. Could you explain?

Nice shot of the Mallard. In terms of negative space, you have set up a contradiction where the black "space" seems to be swallowing the duck, especially where the black bg is integrated with the subject's form, robbing it of a clear outline. -tv
