I like how the attention is immediately drawn to the antenna. Good work. -gerald

Thanks Barry and Rich :-)

Well done Brent and no doubt about being on topic. Rich

Great shot Brent! Really nice colors and I love the tree details on the horizon and the placement of the radar tower right in the sweet spot!
Brent 23-Mar-2007 23:19
Oh I don't know Rod, you guys are all welcome to come to the opening (I hired some big crowd control guys from a motorcycle club) and the wine and cheese is on me. Just don't expect me to pay for your flights ;-)
Rod 23-Mar-2007 22:28
You should wait until you meet Barry he got a large crowd to visit me & Sue Ann's challenge winning sunset shots & just threw rocks at us, now everyone hates our shots so I know wot you mean:-)
PS. Don't invite Barry to your show on opening night as Bill Warren, Rich & me don't want him interrupting us while we're discussing your shots:-)

Brent, I actually like this better than the other! The mountains were beautiful but I love the sky here backlighting the tower and the trees - seems more dramatic to me. Good luck with your show - I'm sure it will be well received! Keep us informed in the thread. CJ

Thanks Rod, I'm okay. I just have a lot going on at work and that show starting next month I need to get 15 images ready for (almost done now). I guess I am a bit thin skinned. Again, I do appreciate criticism, but I felt your mild questioning of topic worthiness (which was totally fine) was claimed a "consensus" by just one other doubter and then the damage is done. I've seen this happen with other people's images before and stepped in to defend them and didn't like it happening to me this time. No big deal, have a good day and don't forget to keep chewing that nicotine gum ;-)
Rod 23-Mar-2007 07:14
I hope wotever you have going on at the moment isn't too serious Brent.
But you are being a bit over sensitive as you have as many saying they like it as there is questioning if it's backlit. Anyhow who wants a challenge where all the comments are praising the the shot, I for one would die of boredom.
Cheer up mate:-)
Brent 23-Mar-2007 06:05
Thanks Mikey, I liked the original image better also and it fit the topic too as per your follow-up definition. But I'm not sure all the topic police read those definitions and the original got the kiss of death by them with their comments. This should stop them from whining now even though the image doesn't have the drama the original did. I expect I'm overly sensitive with all I have going on right now, but I can't help but feel picked on just a bit here. I'm not adverse to critcism, but those giving it should either be very sure of themselves something is off topic or suggest rather than proclaim that it is.

I liked the other one better, Brent. But, this one is nice, too. As I expressed in the opening message in this thread, "The light source may be the sun, artificial light, reflections from a snow-covered hill or a sand dune, etc. Fill flash or other light sources may be used, but the dominant light source must be behind the subject." I'd say that both your pix qualify as "on topic", IMhO. As I also said in my follow-up Definitions post: "I *WILL NOT* be defining any pix as "Off Topic" and moving them to Pending Gallery." So, its up to the ahrtiiist and the voters, as to final disposition. Warm fuzzies, -mikey
Brent 22-Mar-2007 15:14
I don't know guys. Thanks for expressing your viewpoint, but I don't see why a bright snow field lit by the sun behind the subject regardless of where the sun is positioned wouldn't be valid? It may not be as blatant an example of backlit as an image with the sun directly behind a subject, but sometimes subtleness works too- I think so anyway :-)
ctfchallenge22-Mar-2007 11:47
If the morning sun was behind you and the radar tower in shadows because of the clouds overhead, then then I'd say its not backlit. Imho. Rich
Rod 22-Mar-2007 09:11
I think Mikey should blow his nose & give his opinion on this grossly off topic shot..........now that should drop it down in the voting:-)hehe
Bill Warren22-Mar-2007 04:04
The tower is backlit but my eye is first strongly drawn to the bright mountain which becomes the dominant element in the composition and the tower is a secondary element.
Brent 22-Mar-2007 03:45
Thanks Mikey, CJ and Bill. I'm kinda' scratching my head wondering how that radar tower isn't appearing backlit to you Bill. Rod wasn't very adamant about whether he thought it was or not, besides he's cranky from being recently smoke-free for life anyway. I realize the whole picture isn't backlit, but how is the intended subject not in your opinion? Maybe I'm missing something? :-)
Bill Warren22-Mar-2007 00:47
Hey this is exactly how my backyard looks--in my dreams. Beautiful shot but I am agreeing with others that this is dominantly front lighted.
ctfchallenge21-Mar-2007 21:20
Interesting shot Brent - love those mountains and drifting clouds! CJ
ctfchallenge21-Mar-2007 19:59
Nice shot, Brent. I like the layers you've captured, here. Its like several different worlds in overlay. Congrats, -mikey
Brent 21-Mar-2007 14:48
Thanks much guys. The bus is nice when I don't feel like riding my bike Jano, but unfortunately there are times when I see, hear and smell the character sitting next to me and debate whether it is worth it for a 15 minute ride- life in the big city I guess ;-) I think you have a rather long commute and can see where the availability of a bus would be wonderful.
ctfchallenge21-Mar-2007 10:46
Nicely done Brent - I like the way the violet clouds accentuate the radar tower's color. Excellent composition I think with great exposure. Wish I could ride a bus. jano
Rod 21-Mar-2007 06:49
Saying it like that of course its on topic:-) You had no worries anyhow as we only put duff shots that are off topic in pending, great shots like this transcend any limitations of a topic..........I fink:-)
Brent 21-Mar-2007 06:36
Thanks Rod. I noticed this from the porch as I was running to catch a bus this morning. That tower is usually the whitest splash of white when viewing that area, but today ominous dark clouds were shielding it from the morning sun and most of the brightness was coming from the sun lit snowfields on the mountain back behind it- I think that qualifies the shot, dun' it?
Rod 21-Mar-2007 06:21
Geez lovely colours in this shot Brent well done. I get more the impression that the tree line is in shadow rather than being backlit.
