caterpillar*

Santa Barbara

This is a monarch caterpillar.
There were all the forms of monarchs all over my friend's place in Santa Barbara.
I got pictures of the caterpillars and the chrysalises (chrysali?) but the dog kept chasing the butterflies!

Thanks all! I think this is a milkweed leaf that it's crawling on. There are a lot of flowers right now in Santa Barbara California. Well, maybe not after this cold snap, but when I took this it was 70 degrees during the day. Pretty nice!

Well shot Christina. That spike is evil looking!

Great picture of the Monarch larvae Christina! There must be a lot of milkweed in the area as I think that is about all they eat. The butterflies like nectar so your friend must have blooming flowers this time of year? How nice! It's too cold for Monarchs around here to see this fascinating life cycle - I envy you! Nice shot of the caterpillar heading into the dark. CJ

They're just all around the garden. I guess there are some plants that both the caterpillars and the butterflies like and so they congregate. There are a lot of wood planks that are perfect caterpillar hotels all around for them to build their chrysalises on. It was pretty neat!

It's antennae wich looks like a big spike here sure does make it look evil ;)
Must've been loads of fun to take pics of all the different stages of butterfly life.
Does your friend buy and raise the butterflies indoors or just have them all around the garden?
