Maybe the best way to get the colour you want in the background & expose the flowers right would be to shoot in overcast weather or early or late in the day which will give less contrasty lighting. Overcast weather is the best time for most normal colour work, if strong shadows are not needed.

Definiitely I like this one better. I see what you're saying about the green in the other, but this is a much nice shot overall!
