I like how the flower emerges from the shade and the leaf pattern

Thanks John. This is the last version! :-) CJ

I like this one just the way it is. It is like putting a spotlight on the pretty colors. I would not mess with it and try to make it a "traditional" flower shot. It is very striking.

Brent, this is pretty much as it came out of the camera with only a little contrast and USM. It was my very 1st version which I never posted as I kept thinking I needed to "fix" it because of the highlights. All my "fixes" made it either look too dull or unreal to me so I went back to the original. This looks better to me too as some of the petals now have a more translucent look to them. Thanks for looking! :-) CJ

Well maybe it's just my monitor at home in a better light setting, but this looks much better to me now CJ. Great work!

PS: Thanks Brent! :-) CJ

Here's another version - I hope my last one! :-) CJ

Love the composition CJ and it might look different on another monitor than the one I'm using now in a rather bright office, but it seems just a little too dark-again it could just be my monitor.

This was taken in bright sunlight with the 50mm f/1.8 at a fairly high shutter speed and the DOF is very shallow giving the very dark background. I may have to try a different method of toning down the edges of the flower without affecting the pink/red tones as the bud does look a little dull now. Thanks for your input Rod, I've never calibrated my monitor so I think I better do that first. :-) CJ

It could be a screen problem Carole but my prints turn out pretty close to what I see on screen so I think I'm OK with mine. The exposure on this shot is strange as the flowers are still sort of too bright on the highlights & too dark elsewhere. (It could just be the sensor not handling the reds) Before the shot looked as though it had blown highlights around the edges of the flowers making them glow in a not very nice way for me.

Thanks for the hint Britt - I wondered why Rod said it looked nuked - he could have said it might be a tad over-exposed but "Nuked"?! Ever since we've talked about the differences in monitors, I've wondered if others see what I see, as this didn't look too awfully bright on my screen. I may change it back as this looks a little dull to me. CJ

Britt is so excessive, everything to the max. Nuke em:-)
Britt 16-May-2006 13:29
I liked it the way it was...Rod tends to put nasty comments on pictures that he thinks can beat him, so you will change them and he will do better in the challenge. Change it back. LOL :)

I better call Mereana and warn her! :-) CJ
Rod 15-May-2006 19:48
Sure is. The lighting looks much better to me now & I'm feeling romantic too, so it must look good now:-) Well done.
ctfchallenge15-May-2006 15:04
Better? CJ
Rod 15-May-2006 11:33
I like most of the flower shots to look sort of soft & romantic but this has the look of it being nuked:-)

Gorgeous lighting on this one. My Rhododendron isn't blooming yet... :(
nice one :) ~Britt
