Paul, The title and the shot work really well together, nice eye here. Yvonne

First off, thanks for all the comments both positive and negative, they're all welcome.

Apart from resizing so you can view it without having to scroll and removing some rubbish on the floor i've left this as it was when i did the very first crop from the original.

I tried another crop losing some of the bottom of the photo but the crease in the pole and the wire pulled tight giving the obvious in your face tension of the photo was lost with just moving it towards the lower part of the image. I felt the difference in just a small crop was noticably for the worse.

I like the white sky- no, it's not so much i like the white sky but i like the way the barbed wire fades into the white sky and the next pole away dissolves in the light.

I've found quite a few times posting entries here that i've tried to mess about with the photo or even reshoot but even if the first has been crook the replacement always loses the spontanaity of the time that you were walking along and spotted something for the first time.

Rod, Paul mentioned something about cropping the right but wanting to keep the cobweb. After playing around with this in PS, I now change my mind completly about cropping the bottom. I like the way the top wires and the bottom fence mirror each other. And I think either color or B&W work for this picture. With color, you see subtle variations in the color of the post and with B&W you focus an the post and the eyes don't wander to the BG. The only thing that distracts my eye with either version are the whitish patches in the BG on the left below the trees. I like the texture of the paint on the post and the lighting too. Very nice picture Paul! :-) CJ

Where did a tight crop on the right come from Carole? I haven't suggested that & I can't see where it is suggested:-) I'm just saying Paul could have composed this shot better without the distractions all around the pole. That's why I like the B&W better as the distractions disappear. The eye will always be attracted to brightness in a colour shot & not nearly so much in B&W. We can't make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, so I'm interested in Britt’s rework of this.
This is for me is still Pauls best attempt at a photographic image, have you seen Pauls other rubbish Carole:-)

I like the color version better too and a tight crop on the right doesn't look right to my eyes either as you lose the shallow DOF of the wire or if you do crop the right, maybe only go up to the web. A tighter crop on the bottom would look good though, as it moves the wire around the pole down into the lower third of the picture for a better composition. :-) CJ

Well i'm only allowed 3 shots so i'm trying to get as many elements as possible into each one. It's that new movement i'm starting. I could take a dozen for this challenge and not one would be a shopping trolley or a tyre.

Patience for a new version, we have a week to go. You'll whinge about it anyway.

Paul, Paul, Paul it's really quite cute you liking the cobweb but you just can't have everything in one picy mate. Next time compose a shot of the wet post, then compose a shot of the barbed wire running off into the white yonder, then compose a shot of the cobweb, then compose a shot of the sun drenched trees. I know, I know, this means taking 4 or 5 different shots but you don't have to pay for any film:-)
When do we see Britt's makeover?
Paul 01-May-2006 07:49
Thanks Britt, check yours :>)

Rod, i did think first about cropping tighter to the right to lose most of what is there but i didn't want to lose the cobweb. I bet you haven't noticed the cobweb have you? You're stuck on that sky.
Britt 30-Apr-2006 14:15
Paul, check your email regarding this one.
Rod 30-Apr-2006 13:43
It's not blown blown like we get but it does draw the eye, that's why I do like the B&W version much better as it makes the pole & wire around it the focal point with no other distractions. Distractions like the wires going down to the sunlit trees, the fence below that, & we have another place to look at on the right. It's normally very hard to get a shot to work with a view on two sides of a division. As you have proven here:-)
BUT, I think this is your best shot yet photographically speaking, as we can see you trying to create a shot, something that's been lacking in you previous entries:-)

Thanks CJ and Rod.

Rod, i couldn't get the exposure book here in Oz so i got it from Amazon UK who did free postage in the UK. I'm going back for 3 weeks in late June so i had it delivered to my mums and i'll pick it up then.

I don't find the sky blown. It's very white but not too much on my monitor, i'll have a piddle around with b&w and see how that goes.
Rod 30-Apr-2006 06:30
At first when I saw the thumbnail I thought it was one of my shots until I saw the blown sky. This is really getting into an area known as photography, well done Paul That book must be working.
Have you tried this in B&W? Then the sky won't be the problem it is here.
The pole looks excellent.
ctfchallenge30-Apr-2006 05:25
I like this one Paul. Great perspective, DOF and sharp. I like how the pole is dented to show how much tension must have been applied to tighten the wire. Nice lighting which shows up the texture of the pole too :-) CJ
