Cat - got your email, sent you a response. That's the kind of discussion I love to get into around here, but happens all too infrequently. Thanks!! ~ Lonnit

Lonnit, Check your email in on the island dot net mail box. -Cat

Lonnit, Good to hear from you on your approch and though process. I agree with you on the style and art part, monotonous part. I have absolutely no problem with the processing. I think you are doing a good job to set yourself apart (above) the masses. Bravo....
However I do not agree with you on the comp. i.e. chopping off the head part. Will send you an email on that -- Cat

Cat - Yes, I'm the first to complain when my brother-in-law chops off people's heads in a picture. But he is not an artist, just an amateur guy taking snapshots. ;) Remember, rules are meant to be broken, but not just for the heck of it. It's best to break them for a specific purpose. They would have detracted from the image and statement, so I did not include them.
The empty space in the foreground is there to give the lady plenty of space to be lonely within, again adding to the drama and statement. Thank you very much for that wonderful compliment. Please don't ever hold back on a comment. All are valid and all are appreciated. Comments are my best source of education. Not only do I learn from them when I've made a mistake, and the comments point that out, I also learn when I have to explain my actions, and why I believe an image of mine does work. That helps me to think more deeply the next time. There is nobody whose comments are not worth being heard. Please don't ever hold back. This image leans towards the edgier side because of the rule it has broken. Edgier images are not nearly as popular with viewers - many people like more "safe" or "traditional" imagery. It's just likely that you don't care for the style of it, and that is totally fine. If we all liked the same things we'd all take the same pictures and we'd all be bored! ;) The comments I removed were just my noticings about the image - the contrast of the bright vs. dark, colorful vs. black, crowd vs. loner, whole pumpkins vs. broken, etc. Thanks sooo much for speaking up on this one!! :D

Alexeig - I do you think that her head would severely detract from the because it's not a statement about the particular people there. It's a statement about feeling left out in a crowd; about not belonging. Adding in all the faces makes it a statement about this particular woman, and not a generalized feeling. At some time or another, we've all felt akward somewhere. Adding the heads makes it less likely for the viewer to relate b/c they become distracted by "who is this?" rather than the overall feeling one gets of akwardness and loneliness.

Yvonne - Thanks for commenting. I really did laugh out loud! :)

Armin - Perhaps. My thinking was to keep all of her darker so that it is an opposing statement to all the brightness and color amongst the participants. ~ Lonnit

(*) To be frank, had this been taken by a novice, I would have said: "You missed the heads in a people shot, that is not good. You could have moved the camera up a little and gotten the head too, instead of the empty patch of grass in the forground." But knowing this is a 'Lonnit', puzzles me. I have great admiration for your work, Lonnit and sometime I don't comment on your shots is because they are not worthy of my comments. But this one is either too good ( classified as art ) and I don't get it or.... Perhaps the comments you removed on Rod's request might have helped me. -Cat

Lonnit, do you think that her head would detract from the picture?
ctfchallenge04-Nov-2005 03:31
Lonnit, Difficult lighting to work with here to include the people in the distance and this poor over dressed woman. I like the differant point of view. I can feel her "pain" although I know what to wear to pumpkin patches for crying out loud. Yvonne

I like the unconventional aspect here, but I would like to see more "detail" - the blue dress would add an even greater contrast to the green/orange/yellow part of the picture, so I would consider to give it a bit more light?! ~ Armin

I like the edgy feel of this picture!

Perhaps you could clone a pumpkin on her head, now that would be art:>)

Paul, it's art - it's allowed to be odd! LOL! ;) I figured this would be one of those love-it-or-hate-it images, so I'm not shocked if it's not your cup of tea. That's to be expected when one intentionally breaks the rules. )

Rod, you really get it! That's great. I'm looking to go in a less conventional direction and so your comments are very encouraging. I really appreciate it. :) BTW, since my commentary about the shot was bothersome, I took it down. If the image is good enough, it will say those things to the viewer. If they need to be pointed out, then it's not good enough. I think there is enough being said within the image, repeatedly, to support my statement visually, without the written word. ~ Lonnit

I really like this as it provokes a response from the viewer. The shot has tension, it's the type of shot that if I was viewing shots on the wall this would make me stop & investigate it more. Hopefully the description you placed under the shot here won't be there to spoil my viewing of the shot. Very good work Lonnit, I salute ya:-)

She's got no head either. Saves on the hairdo i suppose. Looks most odd to me with the crop as it is.
